As children, the Fire Department taught us to Stop Drop and Roll if we were ever on fire. It’s unfortunate that in our society today, there is a need for a new mantra: Run Hide Fight. If the recent shooting in Aurora teaches us anything, it’s that we need to be prepared for anything at anytime.
You may think that as proponents of gun ownership our first option would be to fight, but it is better to assess the situation and determine the course of action that has the best chance of survival. Sometimes this means running away or hiding. The difference between us and most of the rest of the population is, if we need to, we have the option to fight.
There are several keys to using this option:
- Knowledge – Know the law, know yourself, have situational awareness
- Equipment – The right gun, the right ammo, the right carry
- Training – Be able to hit what you shoot at, practice till you can
